| Nyctivoe is the verse play which foms the central panel in a trilogy of dramatic poems by Dimitris Lyacos, Poena Damni - the Torment of the Damned. Poena Damni echoes the idea of damnation as banishment from the sight of God. Originally written in Modern Greek, parts of the trilogy have been published in German and in English.
While working on Poena Damni, Dimitris Lyacos came across the sculped masks by Fritz Unegg. Some of Unegg's images were then chose to illustrate the Greek and English versions of one part of the trilogy. The First Death. Nyctivoe takes the conjunction of sight and sound, text and idea into a new sphere. Poet and sculptor have actively collaboreted on theis new installation. Pre--recorded voices eminate form a set of purposely crafted sculped heads-the faces of death. The Nyctivoe installation is dense, dramatic, ambiguous; there are biblical references, echoes of vampire myth, of post-holocaust nightmares, of Japanese Noh play. The Nyctivoe installation is produced by the Austrian Cultural Forum. The Greek text is published (both with a German translation) by CTL-Presse, D-22765 Hamburg. www.ctl-presse.de www.lyacos.net |
