angie karatza art history, like any history,is not "written"; it is rather "roasted" slowly | 2-24.11.09 - cheapart

On November 2nd, 2009, Cheapart hosts the opening of the 6th Personal Exhibition of Angie Karatza, titled: Art History, like any history, is not "written"; it is rather "roasted" slowly. Last exhibition's catalogue ended with the question: "Öwill Angie -the batcat- Karatza, be able to overcome the "hurdles" of the clothes which, like nightmares, dress up her artistic course in the abyss of world art?" What a nice surprise she had! World art and its history joined her, unexpectedlyÖ

In her new artwork, Angie Karatza, encloses in transparent material (vivak), a unique viewpoint of world history, exactly like she did with the clothes that were hanging from the hangers, as if they came out of well packed suitcases. Nicely ironed and looking happy!

Her four-year involvement in the double page art section of the "Explorers", a supplement in the Saturday edition of Kathimerini newspaper, is the starting point of her new trip, in which she hopes that the viewers will accompany her, and write their own stories too.
This project started right after a dream she had: pages of the "Explorers" supplement were roasting on the slow burning fire of a roasting jack, while the following phrase appeared on a poster: Art History, like any history, is not "written"; it is "roasted" slowly.

What are dreams without suitcases, without the notion of travelling? What is a suitcase without a dream? Suitcases are now full of pictures and words.

Angie Karatza prints her double page sections on canvas; she enlarges them and changes them. She adds painting and sculptural elements that she fits to her liking. They become the body and the belly of the cat that so persistently escorts her artistic history. The head is the carrier, the brain. It bears the message and loudly passes it along.

The text is written on the cat's hands, while a small doll –the hero and the secret star of the exhibition– sits on its legs. It's the picture of an artwork-cat made in 1997, which was separated by its other half, and now is left alone writing its own story. This is Cattie, and each time she is being transformed according to theme. A short video also presents her story, a love story between the artist- creator and the artwork.
