Local infection of the cosmopolitan | Open Street Fair @ Athens Commercial Triangle

Open street fair / Athens Commercial Triangle
Athens intersection

May 2-7, 2023

"Local infection of the cosmopolitan" is a modular narrative and the first weekly Open Street Fair of the Athens Commercial Triangle. From May to November, over 44 international contemporary artists and curators engage in a series of exhibitions, talks and activities. The exhibitions and events aim to analyze history, existing social realities and current issues, producing a series of perspectives and conclusions on the future of the Commercial Triangle of Athens. Artists from Greece and abroad present artwork in unexpected locations, together with selected musical events, performances and slam poetry, forming a modular tour of the Athenian Triangle.

«The place is bewitched»

May 2-7, 2023
7 Nikiou str., Athens 105 60

Urban communities and neighborhoods have their own local legends, beliefs and myths. While mostly fictional, these stories of the past, present and future of Athens constitute the emotional profile and soul of each neighborhood's diversity. In response, ten artists from Greece and abroad develop their own narratives and interpretations. The classical era, the Roman period and later the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman rule that led to the new era of liberation and transformation of Athens into the capital of the independent Greek State, are the main elements behind these stories. The wars, the Athenian belle époque, political and social conflicts are the fabric components entailed in the artistic approach.

Artists: Dimosthenis Bogiatzis, Vasilis Galanis, Orestis Karalis, Markellos Kolofotias, Dimitris Kontodimos, Marilena Kranioti, Elio Samaras, Stratos Sterianos, the Krank, Andreas Vembos.

«Koto-ba»

May 2-7, 2023
VASI Hotel 5 Vlachava, Athens 105 51

A discussion between Μ. Heidegger and Tezuka Tomio on language.
Language in Japanese, as stated by M. Heidegger's guest, is referred to as «Koto-ba». «Koto» is the void, «ba» are the flower petals. In other words, the flower petals derive from a «void", from a barren and dry land that develops into a growing ground for cherries to blossom. As words sprout from the «void», they surround it, ostracize it, dominate it. The words now exist, although they have emerged from the «void». Man is not in the «void», but within the «symbolic» fabric of language, he is the language, the subject. We must consider the very depth of Japanese philosophy, as it reduces man himself - a species of communication and language, to a «void» against which he reacts to produce language. And, as so he becomes human, by his own means. The same viewpoint is expressed a few centuries later by J. Lacan, who states that man is nothing but the subject caught in, and tortured by the language he created, avoiding the «definite», the chaos, the dissolution from which, moreover, it has originated. The exhibition «koto-ba» perceives photography as a reaction against «nothing», the «void» to be defined as a point in the middle of «no-meaning», «point of nowhere». Japanese culture expresses the tragedy of life that is destined to be disciplined within the framework of a «void» of meaning and reason, that must be structured as Meaning and Reason. In the same way, photography expresses man's heroic effort to give meaning and reason to the unexplained aspects of life and time. «soil and earth / magirion vol.I»

May 3-12, 2023
25 Apollonos Str., Plaka - Mitrópoli

The words chthon (soil) and gāῖa (earth) refer to two opposite aspects of the earth: chthon is the underworld, the surface below the earth, gāῖa is the earth from the surface and above. The intermediate border indicates a fine distinction of that which exists above and below the surface. While the chthon, the underworld, appears to be dark, lifeless and concealed, it is this very world that powers collective prosperity - nourishing and sustaining the agriculture and crops of our world.
«She feeds all creatures that are in the world»: for he whom is blessed by Gaia «has all things abundantly: his fruitful land is laden with corn, his pastures are covered with cattle, and his house is filled with good things. Such men rule orderly in their cities of fair women: great riches and wealth follow them…» Homeric Hymn to Gaia «To Earth Mother of All». (vv. 9-11).
Chthon and gāῖa: Societies live above the line of the earth’s surface, the very line that divides, but also unites the heavenly and underground sphere, life and death, present and past. Through this relationship and the contradiction between these two worlds, humanity can define their actions and navigate to the future.
In our time, however, people renounce their relationship with the chthonic world, they engage only with their existence on gāῖa. The more they reject the thought of the nether world, the more their life becomes incomplete. The more they deny knowledge on the depth of Chthonos, seen only as a mere object of exploitation, the more the sunny and happy surface of Gaia is infected, gradually depreciated and destroyed.
In the exhibition «soil and earth / magician vol.I», the artists explore and experiment on the border of this fine line, within a space that that clearly illustrates this contradiction and a building that carries the weight of a series of former ecclesiastical utensil workshops.

«Wordprints on poetic minds»

May 6, 20:00 - 22:00
Mosaikon Hotel, 61 Kolokotroni, Athens 105 60

A poetry performance that will touch your mind with words, activating the ancient needs and wants in your inner self. The team of “Poetry Slam Gr” presents the poetic performance "Wordprints on poetic minds". A show that combines spoken word, contemporary poetry, with music and audiovisuals. Recognized spoken word artists from Athens and Barcelona, with experience in performing poetry, will appear on the show to perform poems based on freedom of identity and emotions, to give justice to a worth living life. The project aims to function as a healing process between the audience and the performers. A combination of poems that promises to lead to many emotions and safe heartbeats.
In the ancient years, people didn’t care about how to block and remove adware from Google Chrome. Their needs and wants were deeper and basic, and they cared about community. In our days, artists care about the needs of a community like equality, no discrimination, respect, evolution of ideas, engagement, various activities belonging to our interest, trying to find ways to express their worries. Poetry has developed new forms of communication in order to be respected again in the louder societies that we humans have created.
