ιωμαι
Space52, Athina Lasithiotaki and Katerina Milesi present Elena Gazi
The installation "ἰῶμαι" (=to heal oneself) is not just a passive invocation. It invites visitors to "heal", as the title dictates, through their exposure to a multidimensional and complex space. The installation is an introspective landscape, where collections of uncanny objects, toys, pictures, textiles, herbs, and animal bones form a cabinet of curiosities. They highlight the primal need of human beings to collect, create, and then exhibit, in order to "heal" themselves, mirroring Asclepius' medicinal quality. The artist creates an altar dedicated to the ancient Greek god of healing. Each act is visually mapped in the space through clusters of objects that echo the process of existence thus crippling the idea of oblivion. The participants are invited in this context to praise the sanctity of human life through an allegorical sacrifice. Thus, a circular shape that celebrates the sacred human existence within the circle of life is created.
A loft, a nest, the space in our houses where our material fossils are kept, transforms into an eternal healing divided into three stages: Marriage, Genesis, Death.
