Independent presentations, Artists and Curators | Back to Athens 2024

1st floor

Evgenia Efstathiou, “DOWRY”
Installation
Curated by: George Kartalos

Katerina Botsari, “ΝΙΚΙ”
Audiovisual installation

Werner Widmer, “true blue”
Installation (1,2nd floor)
Water is the primal element of life. Two thirds of the earth's surface is covered by water. Humans are aquatic beings, they are not only largely made of water, they also come from it – the amniotic fluid is the first habitat of a human being. This is probably why humans feel magically attracted to this element.

The work true blue reflects these emotions of vastness, infinity, longing ... It shows water in the form of the sea and clouds as sensory mood images. The sea with its waves and its infinite expanse, which fascinates in a variety of ways; the sky with a cloud formation, which animates daydreams and invents imaginary stories.

On a second level, true blue shows an invitation: to go further, to be brave, to experiment, to discover. The messages 'just go and feel the temperature' and 'just do it' are generated by superimposing an almost identical image, of which only punched-out, mounted circular areas are visible. In their arrangement, the circular areas generate statements in Braille. This means that the statement is 'only' recognisable as a pattern, it is not legible, it duplicates the sensual impression of the original images.

2st floor

Nikos Giavropoulos, “Hypnos”
Audiovisual installation
The video installation "Hypnos –With no dreams-" refers to the crossroads of existence and non-existence, that point between sleep and wakefulness, and finally to the relentless dipole between life and death.
My intention is the images from the video projection and the shadows of the set objects, to create, a sense of an absurd, surreal, dreamlike space. To the question, is there something beyond the space and time of existence? I respond that life is a comic interlude from the eternal non-existence.

Olga Economou Constantinides, “Discourse”
Audiovisual installation
Olga Economou Constantinides' audiovisual installation Discourse isolates the internal discussions performed consciously and subconsciously in every passage of time and redefines our thoughts and consciousness through a stream or a sequence of events. Each artwork in the Discourse collection, captures separately in a different form and method, the unfolding of an unconscious internal perceptive dialogue as a discourse through an existential frame of reference. Hamlet's monologue serves as a vehicle for our transition from "To Be or Not to Be" to "To Live-Exist or Not to Live-Exist" and to what extent?

3st floor

Babis Karalis, "Virgin' Games"
Installation

Sebastian Boulter, “Of Water”
Audiovisual installation
Script, set up and music: Sebastian Boulter
Sound engineering: Teemu Takatalo
Camera and editing: Frank Holbein
Prop maker: Yiannis Halas
Water covers about 71% of Earth’s surface. Of all water on Earth 97% is seawater. From the rest of 3% of fresh water on Earth 77% is ice and 22% is in soil and bedrock. Only about 1% of the world's fresh water is easily usable in lakes, rivers and reservoirs: it means a minimal share of 0.036 percent of all water on Earth. Only 0.001% of our water floats in the clouds.
Approximately two thirds of a human is water. However, the scientists still argue about the origin of the water. In some theory the water on Earth might be older than the Earth itself, and that it has landed on Earth from elsewhere. But we do not really know how it has appeared here. Therefore, water in its all forms and all forms that has water remains partly a mystery.

Basilis Bacalis, “sortie romantique”
Installation
A temple, a memorial, an offering. Using humble materials combined with readymade everyday objects I create a peculiar temple. The faces in the cult images have been replaced with unexpected characters that either play winking at us, or look at us apathetically and simply exist in space. Mouse, Duck, Lemmy and Rozz create their altarpiece and seem to be having a lot of fun in this strange situation.

A little further, a worn bass guitar and an old leather jacket from another era, dominate the space like ghosts. What is the story they carry?
An ashtray with a cigarette that seems to still be burning. A bottle of alcohol, inviting us to drink to our delight
Yonder stands a gallows.

Aikaterini Kanakaki, “White Rabbit” Installation
