Thing

The “thing” dictates, authorizes its appearance through the word and the image. The “thing” is the invisible world that dictates the visible world of meanings and signifiers. Words and images are like the vase. They are empty. They are approximate meanings, containing lack like the vase. Man defends against lack, but also maintains it through desire. Words and images are not solid like stone; they are perforated. Their meaning is tenuous. The very fact that we see is tenuous, since what we see today, we did not see yesterday, within the personal history of man or the history of humanity. Meaning comes last. Usually when we do not need it. Then we see what we did not see. We did not see what was next to us and sought it to avoid it, for instance, we sought the great love where it does not exist. Man defends against lack, because no desire can make him stop desiring. He defends against the void, against the “thing”, chaos, darkness, madness, by enclosing himself, by imprisoning himself within meanings: emotional, political, social, religious or others. In meaning. In the meaning imposed by the void and against which he defends.
