A unique post-lockdown meeting, during which Greek and International artists reconnect in physical presence, in the face and the circumstances of a new reality.
Back to Athens was first introduced at the beginning of the crisis in 2012, and to this day unfolds the concerns and expectations of artists and the public that take place within the Athenian landscape. The aim of the event is to study and document the new reality of our times as it is given through the curatorial concepts and the artwork; a source that will most likely provide conclusions for the near future.
From July 1 to July 4, Back to Athens 2020 takes place in the monumental 1950s building of 48-50 Aiolou street, within its distinctive rooms that once served as small offices and workshops for local businesses. Artists, members of the art community and art lovers meet again this year, taking in consideration protective health measures and obligations commanded by the present conditions.
Back to Athens 2020 is organized by APART Art Research and Applications, collaborating organisation CHEAPART, as a part of the Cultural Program "Αθήνα-Σημεία Τομής 2020/Athens-Intersection 2020" supported by and under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports. Back to Athens 2020 is under the auspices of the City of Athens, supported by the Austrian Embassy in Athens and the Ministry of Culture of Austria, F.O.T.A. (Friends of Trigono Athens). The building of Aiolou 48-50 is courtesy of Zoia. Communication partner, Ta Nea tis Technis (the Greek Art Newspaper).
Since the first edition of Back to Athens, the festival has been active within the wider area of Kotzia Square in Athens (2012-2014), at the historic square of Exarchia district (2016 – 2017), and the Athens Commercial Triangle in 2018.
