Sandbox House

Freedom is our home. The Sandbox House exhibition at Back to Athens 2020, invites us to interpret our personal space as a 'play area'.

The term “sandbox games”, which comes from the real-life sandboxes that exist in playgrounds for the children to play in and in which they have the chance to create whatever they choose, refers to a category of electronic games that entail great freedom of choice. They comprise a virtual world in which the player can shape his/her own character and set the goals he/she wants to achieve. In this way, they offer the player a wider range of creativity and personal expression. The above analogy between the freedom offered by a real and a virtual sandbox has been used in the field of architecture and design as well, describing a condition where a community of people has the potential to shape its surroundings through the selection and combination of elementary predetermined patterns.
In the way that human society is structured - at least until today - the only place where there is so much freedom is our home, as opposed to public space. It is an opportunity to see this space as our own toy, with the freedom to be in it whoever we want, to do whatever we want and to shape our environment however we want.
