To succeed through innovation is a matter of timing. With a lead of accomplishments, it is with confidence we can pinpoint this exact time to be December 13, 1995 when CHEAPART opened its doors for the first time in the historic building of Exarchia in Athens. The 23rd ecition of CHEAPART opens at the exact same venue.
Economic changes have drastically affected the Greek society and reformed the Contemporary art scene in Greece, shuttering fixated taboos on affordable priced artwork. Prior to the recession, work of superior artistic value by important artists was challenged with the notion of being low quality. However, this view was not without its grounds. In certain instances we have witnessed failed attempts and poor representation of affordable art, amplifying as a result, the voices opposed to it. Yet times have changed. A widespread of similar practices resembling CHEAPART are no longer forbidden fruit for artists. CHEAPART multiples are present in Greek art fairs and galleries who in the past denounced the idea now wilingfully adopted.
Over the past 22 years, a vast majority of the art world has associated with CHEAPART either as a participating artist or as a visitor at the Athens, Thessaloniki, Vienna, Limassol and Amsterdam exhibitions. Today, despite the difficulties, the lifelong value of CHEAPART organization and its cultural agenda is based on collaboration among artists and support to the contemporary art scene.
