Athens Eyes
11 contemporary artists and photographers portray the aesthetic paradox of Athens
Athens is the focal point of global publicity. Diverse aspects of the city are portrayed through conflicting images that are difficult to interpret, as the terms “Beautiful" and "Ugly" challenge our everyday aesthetics. A false sense of laxity and comfort is in effect a misfigure of reality, normalizing illegitimacy and the paradox of abnormality. As a result, the most bizarre and engaging images develop.
Artists use the medium of photography to depict the paradoxal oddity and rash development of our aesthetic surroundings. Images, animated and still, opt to suggest a different perspective by means of emphasizing issues that currently may leave the viewer indifferent.
What is there to be interpreted? What do we discard? We keep it all.
The exhibition "Athens Eyes" is presented by the Athens Intersection Cultural Program as a part of the artistic agenda through which the Athens Commercial Triangle Revitalization Program of the Municipality of Athens, implemented with the exclusive donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (ISN), invites us to explore the cultural and historical heritage of Athens. The Old Warehouse of 3 Chrysospiliotissis Street which hosts the exhibition, is courtesy of the Chatzikosta Foundation in the context of the Athens Intersection Cultural Program curated by George Georgakopoulos and coordinated by Fotini Kapiris, Performance series curated by Thanos Vovolis.
