Life: Repetition and Overturn

Greek and international artists examine repetition and overturn, as forces of everyday life

Every single day, we wake up, eat, work and sleep. We all repeat actions. Repetition is life! From a distance, due to this repetition, life somehow seems the same, linear. However, our repeated actions can never be identical, they differ from each other, even when the differences are subtle or unobserved. Even in the case where the actions are exactly the same, they still take place in different time. Looking closely at life, we realise that there are overturns with a positive or negative effect that break this repetition. These overturns, that often go unnoticed, are forces that greatly affect every human being’s flow of life.

In the philosophical novel "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" (1883-1891), Friedrich Nietzsche argued that “in every Instant being begins; around every Here rolls the ball There.” In this sense, nothing stays the same, despite the fact that it may seem consistent and repeated. The content of repetition changes because ‘the same’ in the eternal recurrence of the same comprises differentiation and reproduction. As Nietzsche put it “everything is joined anew.” Similarly, Heraclitus believed that everything is a continuous evolutionary process and the use of the word ‘being’ when we talk about the existence is incorrect because everything is constantly becoming.

For many decades, the old Athenian Warehouse at Chrysospiliotissis Street, has been a meeting point for the art and print world. Life: Repetition and Overturn exhibition invites 8 contemporary artists from Greece and abroad to document the transformation and reuse of the space into a creative workplace open to exchange of ideas, and reminding us that repetition and overturn are life!
