Living Within Walls

"How is it that we grow and express ourselves in Europe today?" The Language and Image Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam hold a 15-day project in Athens, reflecting on this idea.

This phrase incorporates issues of globalization, the uprising of extreme nationalism, freedom of speech, war, the crisis, etc. As observed by the students, Athens is a wonderful place, a crossroad which combines beauty and other elements of interest and virtue. Prior to visiting Athens, they have prepared their concept, and defined their exhibition purpose, remaining open to new ideas and influences from within the city. One student for example, considers journalistic objectivity, ethics and practice, and freedom of the press – to develop a work in progress which continues in public space. Another student is interested in the refugees in Greece, reflecting on their lives and their expectations, prior to leaving their homeland and traveling to Greece.

The idea was initiated in the Netherlands. CHEAPART provides exhibition space for the artists to process and complete their work and ideas, based on their experience of Athens. During this period of time, visual artist, Maria Schina (graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy of Fine Arts), collaborates with the students as their project advisor.

Participants: Francine ter Brummelhuis, Meike Legene, Menno van Winden, Tamar Berends, Teun Grondeman, Wietske Joan.

Head of department: Gijs Müller
