Pause | Dimitris Rotsios, Coti K

Dimitris Rotsios, sound installation: Coti, Curator: Marina Fokidis

How long is it since the day you noticed that the art around you looks exactly like other works you saw in another gallery or in a magazine a few days ago? Do you happen to see images of miserable faces expressing witty quotations wherever you go, nudes in all positions and situations, artists confessing their deepest inner thoughts -interesting or not- in public and being actively involved in “the abstract” one year later? Are you fed up of going in and out of several openings every night, watching the crowd spending five minutes maximum in front of the works and hours at the bar? Are you following the same artists around town, those that manage to produce different works in the speed of light in order to be included in all the hot “curator projects” in town…Then “stop” for a while!
Pause , is a happening that comments this “over-production” of modern art -quite a trend nowadays- leading to the loss of art's initial nature: exploration and expression! It invites the audience to take a deep breath, reconsider the velocity with which new projects and exhibitions spur out and to try to observe life itself.

With this notion in mind, architect Dimitris Rotsios, transformed the art gallery to an “observatory”. He knocked down the actual walls of the building with the help of virtual reality and transformed the “shell” of the exhibition's venue to a vital space of observation, offering the visitor a completely different and unexpected experience. The installation is the offspring of many years of research on the relationship between real and imaginary realms, constituting one of the manifestations that implement the concepts of cyberspace in a real environment.

Simultaneously, Coti supplements the venue with the presentation of a sound installation that addresses a concept: “the pause”. In an effort to extend time and to create room for life, Coti electronically processed 30" of sounds from accidental sources, e.g. his bicycle, a metallic object falling on the floor, a plate turning endlessly on a table, and composed a synthesis with no beginning and no end that repeats itself infinitely…. Coti has been seriously occupied in the past with the observation of random sounds and has composed new sounds through analysis and repetition. His CDs are available in record shops.

Finally, a special sun-bed area, open for the public, will offer rest and conversation, while wine will be served. The visiting hours will be extended until midnight in order for the visitors to enjoy people-watching, above the neighbouring square.
