Visibility
Visibility is an art project by Maria Paschalidou, which explores the dynamics of communication between artists and audience(s) in a public space.
In this project, the participating artists work both collectively and individually, creating not only a physical but also a quasivirtual environment in which the presence/visibility of the artists, of the art product as well as that of the audience(s) is under negotiation.
From November 2006 to September 2007 the participants worked on the production of a collaborative DVD/art product. Copies of the DVD are exchanged with any products and/or goods people are willing to offer, during a public act/performance which takes place in the market of Attiki Square. The result of the public performance and dialogues between the artists and the people in the market, are recorded by video and broadcast live both within the CHEAPART exhibition space and on the Internet (live streaming).
Visibility is materialized on two parallel levels. First, the project addresses the issue of the artist’s visibility as that of her/his art work. The project is staged away from the «familiar, safe, art environment» of a typical exhibition space, open to a broader and unfamiliar audience(s). The objective is to negotiate the visibility and redefine the artist’s role within the frame of an urban environment where daily activities occur.
Secondly, a particular neighborhood of the city of Athens is highlighted. The overcrowded area of Attiki Square, in which populations, cultures, customs and commercial products coexist, plays its own part in the game of visibility versus invisibility. The local residents are invited to contribute to the Visibility project, anonymously or not. In doing so, they become part of a special entity in the DVD/art product as well as in the public act/performance at the market of Attiki Square.
The Visibility project aims to explore the terrain of public art through artistic experimentation, interdisciplinary art practices, collaboration and performative acts.
