CHEAPART Thessaloniki 2007
In 1995 when sixteen artists participated in the first CHEAPART, questions were raised by the audience regarding the level of risk involved. Is the price, the actual value of the art work? Or perhaps, the issue of multiplicity?
How risky is it to present the artist's work at low, but extremely realistic prices, as opposed to high, and many times, fictitious prices? During these last 12 years a lot has been said and written about CHEAPART, both good and bad. CHEAPART always has ears open for dialogue, always willing to answer any question from anyone without hesitation, without hypocrisy. For sure the issue of the low selling price was and continues to provoke, yet at the same time many artists that collaborate with other art spaces have gained recognition through CHEAPART exhibitions due to their mass exposure to a wide public.
CHEAPART was first introduced to Thessaloniki in 1998. Since then, every first CHEAPART exhibition of the year is presented in Thessaloniki. CHEAPART 2007 celebrates its 9th show at Former Camp Kodra, Kalamaria, presenting more than 85 selected artists with new and fresh work entities. The public had the opportunity to see many of these artists in May 2007 during the 1st international CHEAPART, ARTmART, in the context of Vienna Artweek.
Had both consistency and quality not been the two most important attributes for the artists and the organization, CHEAPART would have proven to be another shooting star to vaporize in the atmosphere of Greek reality.
The exhibition opens in the presence of the President of the Cultural Organization of the Municipality of Kalamaria, Mr. Ioannis Iosifidis, on Thursday, July 5, 2007 at 9:00 pm.
